Position Overview
Key Responsibilities & Duties
As a Bolt Torque Technician, your primary function will be to ensure the integrity and safety of bolted connections on critical plant equipment. Your daily tasks will require precision, adherence to strict protocols, and a unwavering commitment to safety.
- Perform precision bolt torque and tensioning operations on flanges, pressure vessels, pumps, valves, and other critical equipment in accordance with engineered specifications and industry standards (ASME, API).
- Calculate and apply correct torque values based on bolt size, grade, lubrication, and gasket requirements.
- Operate, maintain, and inspect a variety of hydraulic torque wrenches, hydraulic tensioning equipment, pneumatic tools, and manual torque wrenches.
- Calibrate torque equipment regularly to ensure accuracy and reliability of all tensioning and torquing tools.
- Read and interpret technical manuals, engineering drawings, P&IDs, and isometric drawings to determine precise torque procedures and sequences.
- Work closely with plant engineers and maintenance planners to schedule and execute bolting programs during turnarounds, shutdowns, and routine maintenance.
- Rigorously follow all company and site-specific safety policies, including LOTO (Lockout-Tagout), permit-to-work systems, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
- Document all torquing activities meticulously, maintaining accurate logs and reports for quality assurance and compliance purposes.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot issues related to bolted joint failures or leaks, recommending appropriate corrective actions.
- Mentor and provide guidance to junior technicians and helpers on proper bolting techniques and safety procedures.
Requirements & Qualifications
To be successful in this technically demanding role, candidates must meet the following criteria and possess a proven track record in industrial bolting applications.
Essential Skills & Experience
- A minimum of 5-10 years of hands-on experience as a Bolt Up Technician, Bolt Torque Technician, or similar role within the Oil & Gas, Petrochemical, or heavy industrial sectors.
- Demonstrated expert proficiency in the operation, maintenance, and calibration of torque/tensioning equipment (e.g., hydraulic torque wrenches, bolt tensioners, hydraulic pumps).
- In-depth knowledge of bolted joint assembly principles, including torque-to-yield, stress-controlled tightening, and flange management best practices.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to use precision measuring instruments like micrometers and calipers.
- Proven ability to work efficiently under pressure during critical plant shutdowns and turnaround projects.
- Exceptional commitment to workplace safety, with formal training in H2S, OSHA, or similar safety standards being a significant advantage.
Education & Certification
- ITI (Industrial Training Institute) certification in Fitter, Mechanic, or a related trade is mandatory.
- Additional certification in bolting technology from recognized equipment manufacturers (e.g., Hydratight, SKF, Atlas Copco) is highly desirable.
- Valid certifications in safety training (e.g., OSHA, NEBOSH, IOSH) are a strong plus.
