Key Responsibilities & Daily Duties
As a QA-QC Engineer specializing in Painting and Coating applications, you will undertake comprehensive quality assurance functions throughout project lifecycles. Your technical expertise will ensure that all surface preparation, painting, and coating activities comply with project specifications, international standards, and client quality expectations.
Primary Quality Control Functions
- Execute thorough inspections of surface preparation, coating application, and curing processes according to project specifications
- Monitor environmental conditions including temperature, humidity, and dew point to ensure optimal painting conditions
- Conduct comprehensive dry film thickness (DFT) measurements using calibrated electronic gauges
- Perform adhesion testing and holiday detection on coated surfaces to verify integrity
- Maintain detailed inspection records, reports, and quality documentation throughout projects
- Review material certificates, safety data sheets, and technical specifications for coating materials
- Coordinate with painting contractors to address quality issues and implement corrective actions
- Verify proper storage, handling, and application of all coating materials and products
Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Develop and implement project-specific quality control plans for painting activities
- Ensure compliance with international standards including ISO, NACE, SSPC, and client specifications
- Conduct audits of coating applicators and subcontractors to verify quality systems
- Participate in pre-job conferences and provide technical guidance on coating requirements
- Interface with clients, third-party inspectors, and certification authorities
- Monitor non-destructive testing activities and evaluate results for coating systems
- Initiate non-conformance reports and track corrective actions to resolution
Qualifications & Experience Requirements
The ideal QA-QC Engineer - Painting candidate will possess a combination of formal education, professional certifications, and hands-on experience in quality control within the Oil & Gas industry.
Education & Certification
- Diploma or Graduation in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field
- NACE Certified Coatings Inspector (Level 2 or 3) certification mandatory
- BGAS-CSWIP Painting Inspector certification highly preferred
- Additional certifications in welding inspection or NDT methods considered an advantage
Professional Experience
- 5-10 years of progressive experience as QA/QC Engineer specializing in painting and coating applications
- Proven track record in the Oil & Gas industry with exposure to upstream, midstream, or downstream projects
- Extensive knowledge of surface preparation standards including abrasive blasting, power tool cleaning, and chemical treatments
- Hands-on experience with coating application methods including spray, brush, and roller techniques
- Familiarity with a wide range of coating systems including epoxy, polyurethane, zinc-rich, and intumescent coatings
- Experience working in desert environments with understanding of climate-specific coating challenges
Technical Competencies
- Comprehensive understanding of international standards including ISO 12944, NACE, SSPC, and ASME
- Proficiency with inspection equipment including DFT gauges, hygrometers, adhesion testers, and holiday detectors
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and coating system recommendations
- Strong documentation skills with experience maintaining detailed quality records
- Knowledge of corrosion mechanisms and prevention methods in offshore and onshore environments
- Familiarity with quality management systems and audit procedures
Work Environment & Location
This position is based in Qatar, specifically in the Al Sadd area of Doha, with potential assignments at various project sites throughout the country. The role may involve:
