Key Responsibilities & Duties

As a Retubing Technician, your primary focus will be on the maintenance and repair of heat exchangers. Your daily responsibilities will include a range of technical tasks critical to plant operations.

• Perform complete heat exchanger retubing processes, including tube removal, bundle cleaning, and new tube installation.
• Execute precise tube repair techniques such as tube plugging, rolling, and expansion to restore equipment functionality.
• Conduct thorough inspections and non-destructive testing (NDT) on heat exchanger tubes to identify defects, leaks, and corrosion.
• Disassemble and reassemble heat exchanger channels, covers, and floating heads for internal access and maintenance.
• Operate specialized tools and equipment for tube cutting, pulling, expanding, and hydrotesting.
• Interpret technical drawings, isometrics, and P&IDs to understand system layouts and job requirements.
• Collaborate with plant engineers and other maintenance personnel to plan and schedule retubing activities during shutdowns and turnarounds.
• Adhere strictly to all company safety protocols, including lockout-tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, and working at heights.
• Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and equipment conditions.
• Provide technical guidance and support to junior technicians and apprentices.
• Ensure all work is completed to the highest quality standards and in compliance with ASME and API standards.

Essential Qualifications & Skill Requirements

To be successful in this retubing technician role, candidates must meet the following criteria and possess a proven track record in mechanical maintenance within the oil and gas sector.

Education & Experience

• A Diploma or Graduation in Mechanical Engineering or a related field is required.
• A minimum of 3-5 years of direct, hands-on experience as a Retubing Technician or in a similar role focused on heat exchanger maintenance.
• Demonstrable experience working on large-scale shell and tube heat exchangers, condensers, and coolers in a petrochemical or refinery setting.

Technical Skills & Competencies

• Expert proficiency in heat exchanger tube repair/replacement methodologies.
• Strong practical knowledge of tube rolling and expansion techniques and tools.
• Familiarity with pressure testing procedures, including hydrostatic and pneumatic tests.
• Ability to identify different tube sheet layouts and types of tube-to-tubesheet joints.
• Basic knowledge of metallurgy related to tubing materials (e.g., carbon steel, stainless steel, admiralty, cupronickel).
• Competence in using precision measuring instruments like micrometers, calipers, and depth gauges.
• Physical stamina and dexterity to handle heavy tools and work in potentially challenging environments.
