Standby Man / Firewatcher Job Description

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Standby Man / Firewatcher to join our Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) team in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This role is critical in ensuring the safety and compliance of operations within the Oil & Gas industry. The successful candidate will monitor hazardous work areas, enforce safety protocols, and respond to emergencies to prevent fire-related incidents.

Job Responsibilities

• Monitor work areas for potential fire hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
• Remain on standby during hot work operations (welding, grinding, cutting) to prevent fire outbreaks.
• Inspect firefighting equipment and ensure its readiness for emergencies.
• Conduct regular safety checks and report unsafe conditions to supervisors.
• Respond immediately to fire incidents and assist in evacuation procedures.
• Maintain logs of firewatch activities and submit reports to the HSE department.
• Coordinate with emergency response teams to ensure quick resolution of incidents.
• Educate workers on fire safety measures and best practices.

Required Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills:

• Safety Awareness: In-depth understanding of fire hazards and prevention techniques.
• Ability to work in high-risk environments under pressure.
• Strong observational skills to detect potential risks early.
• Effective communication skills to relay safety instructions.
• Basic knowledge of firefighting equipment and emergency response protocols.

Education & Experience:

• Education Level: Higher Secondary or equivalent.
• Experience: 5-10 years in a similar role within the Oil & Gas, construction, or industrial sectors.
• Certification in fire safety or HSE training is a plus.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This role involves working in challenging conditions, including:

• Outdoor work in extreme temperatures common in Saudi Arabia.
• Exposure to loud noises, dust, and hazardous materials.
• Standing or walking for extended periods.
• Wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
